Islanders Reminded to Take Extra Care as Fire Service Issues Wildfire Warning

Residents in Jersey are being urged to take simple precautions to help prevent wildfires as summer approaches.

While the current risk remains low, Jersey Fire and Rescue Service has warned that dry and breezy conditions could quickly turn a small flame into a serious blaze.

“Jersey has many areas of gorse that are particularly vulnerable,” said station commander Mark Bailey-Walker. “We’re asking the public to help by staying vigilant — prevention is everything.”

The service is advising people to avoid lighting barbecues in wooded or grassy areas, and to refrain from starting bonfires or discarding cigarette butts outdoors.

They also reminded islanders not to leave fires or barbecues unattended and to avoid littering with glass bottles, which can focus sunlight and ignite dry vegetation.

“Even when the overall risk is low, the consequences for local wildlife, the environment and public safety can be huge,” Mr Bailey-Walker added.

The call comes as the island looks to avoid incidents like past wildfires, such as the one that scorched land near Bonne Nuit.
