Jersey’s Chief of Police has commended islanders for their responsible behaviour following England’s dramatic World Cup victory, which saw pubs across the island remain open until 4am.
The Three Lions secured a 3–2 win thanks to a brace from Jude Bellingham and a penalty from Harry Kane, booking a quarter-final clash with Norway on Saturday.
Extended opening hours were approved by the Bailiff’s Chambers after consultation with both police and representatives from the licensed trade, allowing venues to remain open later than usual for the high-profile fixture.
In a statement, Chief of Police Robin Smith thanked officers, police staff, honorary colleagues, and hospitality workers for managing what he described as a busy but successful weekend.
He said sport had a strong ability to unite communities, adding that it was “wonderful to see so many islanders coming together” to enjoy the tournament. He also noted that the vast majority of supporters celebrated safely, looked out for one another, and maintained a positive atmosphere throughout the night.
Under current arrangements, pubs that applied for extensions may remain open until 2am for remaining World Cup fixtures.
England’s next match against Norway is scheduled for a 10pm kick-off on Saturday, with continued public celebrations expected if the team progresses further in the tournament.
