Taxi fares in Jersey have seen a sharp increase due to a vehicle convoy system introduced during resurfacing works on Route de Noirmont in St Brelade. The system, led by a work vehicle, was put in place to ensure safe access to homes and businesses while the road remains closed.

The States of Jersey confirmed that the main highway has been shut since 20 January, with a scheduled reopening on 12 February—two days earlier than originally planned. Officials stated that the convoy was the most effective method to guide drivers through the affected area.

One taxi driver reported that a journey which typically costs around £12 had nearly doubled in price for a customer due to the detour. Local residents acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the system but recognised the necessity of the resurfacing work. Some noted that while the process had been well-managed, the convoy system had occasionally led to additional delays.

The Infrastructure Department of the States of Jersey indicated that this was the first time such a convoy system had been implemented on the island. Given the limited access routes in the area, officials stated that alternative solutions were challenging.

Authorities maintain that the convoy remains the best approach for directing motorists between St Aubin and Portelet car park while the roadworks are completed.
