Les Quennevais Sports Centre is celebrating three decades at the heart of the community this week, marking 30 years since it first opened on 27 May 1996.

To commemorate the milestone, the centre is hosting a special fitness challenge in aid of Les Amis, with funds raised supporting the local charity.

Among those reflecting on the centre’s journey is long-serving Active staff member Rob Marett, who has worked in the industry for more than 36 years and witnessed the venue’s transformation since day one.

Speaking about the anniversary, Mr Marett said he still remembers the excitement surrounding the opening of the centre under its first manager, Angie de Carteret, who remains closely connected to the facility today.

“She still comes up and swims with us now,” he said. “I swam with her in the Swimarathon this year, and it really shows the spirit that both the staff and the public have always brought to this place.”

Over the years, the sports centre has undergone major changes, with advancements in safety procedures, pool maintenance and fitness facilities.

“We’ve seen huge developments in lifeguarding techniques and the equipment we use,” Mr Marett explained. “Even the chlorination systems for the pools are much more efficient than they were 30 years ago.”

The site has also expanded its offering to visitors, now featuring a skate park, a modern cardiovascular fitness suite and an upgraded free weights area.

Reflecting on his career at the venue, Mr Marett described the centre as being central to his life and highlighted the strong relationships formed with generations of visitors.

“You build bonds with customers over the years,” he said. “You’ve seen children grow up, then have children of their own. Teaching and supporting people across generations has been wonderful to witness.”
