Jersey students have praised the island’s new £8 million sports facilities at the Oakfield Centre, describing them as a welcome boost for fitness and sporting opportunities.
Officially opened on Thursday, the state-of-the-art complex sits beside Highlands and Hautlieu colleges and is already proving popular with students who are using the facilities as part of their lessons.
The Oakfield Centre includes a 3G pitch, martial arts studios, and a purpose-built gymnastics hall, offering spaces for a wide range of activities.
‘A wider range of opportunities’
Highlands College students Leah, 17, and Susannah, 18, said they were impressed by the new facilities.
“I think it will really bring in younger teenage girls and older women,” said Leah.Susannah added: “It’s nice to get new equipment and space – it opens up more opportunities to try different sports.”
The centre, operated by Active, replaces some of the fitness facilities previously available at Fort Regent, which closed earlier this year. Many of its activities have now moved to Oakfield.
Highlands students Oscar and Adam, both 17, have also been taking advantage of the new equipment.“It’s right next to Hautlieu and Highlands, so you can go in before classes – it’s ideal,” said Oscar. “It’s great to get into fitness at a young age.”Adam agreed: “This promotes fitness and keeps people healthy. It’s got everything you need.”
Addressing club concerns
Some local sports clubs have raised concerns about access to the new centre after being relocated from Fort Regent. The Government of Jersey has said it will continue to work with community groups to ensure everyone has the facilities they need.
