Work progressing on £8m Oakfield Community Sports Centre in Jersey

Construction on Jersey’s new Oakfield Community Sports Centre is moving forward, with the government hailing the project as a “new philosophy” for sport on the island.

The £8m facility in St Saviour will join a network of sports venues across Jersey. It will feature a multi-use sports hall and a dedicated gymnastics centre alongside the existing football pitch and hall, forming part of what officials describe as an “inclusive, community-focused and future-ready” approach to local sport.

The centre is scheduled to open in October, replacing some of the facilities at Fort Regent in St Helier, which the government has deemed “at the end of its usable life.”

In a recent blog post updating residents, the Government of Jersey acknowledged there had been challenges during the project. These included site inspections, arranging transitional funding, and organising “tailored relocation” for certain activities — such as moving the Empire skating roller club from Fort Regent to Haute Vallée.

During school hours, Oakfield will be available for educational use, while evenings and weekends will be open to sports clubs and the wider community.

A government spokesperson said: “Oakfield represents not just a new building, but a new philosophy for sport in Jersey: inclusive, community-focused and future-ready.”
