A planning bid has been lodged to dismantle the ageing landing stage at Gorey Pier, which Ports of Jersey says has reached a state of significant deterioration.
According to the organisation, removing the structure is an essential step in safeguarding the integrity of the Grade I-listed pier and preserving its historic character. The proposal outlines plans to take down the upper deck and its supporting pillar, with temporary supports to be installed from the lower deck to the original pier framework.
Harbour Master Captain William Sadler said extensive work had gone into assessing the pier’s condition and determining a responsible course of action.
“The landing stage has served the island well for decades,” he said. “But it’s now time to take the necessary steps to ensure the pier remains safe and usable for generations to come.”
Ports of Jersey hopes that, assuming the application progresses without delay, work can begin in March or April 2026 and be finished ahead of the summer season. All works would be carried out from the seaward side to limit disruption for pier users.
The removal marks the opening stage of a broader programme designed to strengthen and protect Gorey Pier. Initial findings from a recent survey of the pier arms and head, conducted earlier this year, suggest that targeted repairs and upgrades will significantly improve the pier’s condition in the years ahead.
