Islanders advised not to act on French nuclear test alert

Residents on Jersey’s east coast are being reminded not to take any action if they receive a nuclear emergency alert message later this week.

Authorities in France’s Manche department are scheduled to test the warning system for the Flamanville nuclear power plant on Thursday. The exercise is intended to ensure that alerts can be reliably delivered in the event of a real emergency.

According to the Government of Jersey, some islanders may receive a French-language text message accompanied by a short, high-pitched alert tone.

Officials stressed that this is part of a routine test and that no response is required. The government compared it to the UK’s recent national emergency alert trial.

Residents whose phones connect to French mobile networks — particularly those within about 20km (12 miles) of the Flamanville plant — are most likely to receive the message.

The test may also involve the activation of sirens, radio announcements, and other public warning systems across the region.
