Two new pedestrian crossings have been installed on Mont Millais to improve safety for students and residents near Jersey College for Girls.
The Government of Jersey said the upgrades were designed to make it easier and safer for people walking in the busy school area. The works include a signal-controlled crossing completed in early September and a pedestrian refuge island linking two bus stops south of the JCG car park.
Enhancements around the signal crossing include a larger waiting space, better lighting, improved visibility for pedestrians and drivers, and a wider footpath along Mont Millais.
Early monitoring shows the crossing is already in heavy use, with an average of 560 people using it daily during school days in September and October.
The improvements form part of the wider Bagatelle Safer Routes to School programme, which aims to promote walking, cycling and bus travel for around 7,500 pupils in the area. The government is also running a six-month trial of a part-time pedestrian crossing on Clarence Road near Victoria College Prep.
Jersey College for Girls principal Carl Howarth welcomed the move, saying the new crossings had “significantly improved” safety for pupils and local residents.
Infrastructure Minister Connétable Andy Jehan added that the Mont Millais works were an important step in encouraging active travel. “The project has been shaped by feedback from the school and local community, and forms part of our continued commitment to safer school routes,” he said.
