A new government-backed initiative has been launched in Jersey to help tackle skills shortages in key sectors, including childcare, healthcare, construction and renewable energy.
The Government of Jersey has announced it is seeking accredited training providers to deliver courses locally as part of its new Skills Development Scheme. The aim is to ensure islanders can gain vital qualifications without having to travel off-island.
Key priority areas were agreed following a panel meeting held on 20 August. These include childminding, specialist catering skills, roofing, solar and photovoltaic installation, low-carbon heating systems, data analysis and data science, healthcare support roles, historic building management and scaffolding.
Officials say the scheme is designed to broaden access to training through a range of options such as short courses, diplomas and apprenticeships, helping people to upskill or retrain for in-demand roles.
A government spokesperson said the programme would play a crucial role in supporting Jersey’s economy, strengthening the workforce for major infrastructure projects — including the new hospital — and helping meet the island’s long-term environmental targets under its Carbon Neutral Roadmap.
