New ferry service might have bumpy start - Farnham

Jersey's Chief Minister Warns of ‘Bumpy’ Start to New Ferry Service

Jersey’s Chief Minister, Deputy Lyndon Farnham, has warned islanders to expect some initial disruptions as the new ferry service with DFDS settles in. Defending the government’s handling of the tender process, he said it would take time to establish timetables and adjust operations.

Jersey and Guernsey opted for separate ferry providers, with Jersey choosing Danish firm DFDS and Guernsey selecting Brittany Ferries. Farnham acknowledged the transition would bring short-term inconvenience but insisted it was necessary for long-term benefits.

Marking his first year in office, Farnham also announced that details on funding for major projects, including a new hospital and Fort Regent’s refurbishment, would be revealed next month. He emphasized the need to address decades of underinvestment and ensure projects are fully funded before being announced.

Addressing criticism of his leadership, Farnham dismissed concerns over uncertainty caused by the ferry process and defended his decision to take a less public-facing role, prioritising action over appearances. He also praised the diversity of views in his Council of Ministers, arguing that debate leads to better decision-making.
