Jersey Launches Campaign Film in Bid for UNESCO Global Geopark Status
A new campaign film has been released as part of Jersey’s ambitious bid to gain international recognition for the island’s unique geological heritage.
Jersey Heritage is seeking designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark, which would place the island among a prestigious network of more than 200 recognised geoparks worldwide.
The film, titled A Symphony of Creation, offers a visually stunning and evocative portrayal of Jersey’s dramatic natural history—shaped over 600 million years by fire, ice, and sea.
According to Visit Jersey, the video brings to life the island’s raw, elemental past and showcases several of its most significant geological sites, or “geosites.” Featured locations include La Couperon, Les Blanches Banques, Plémont, Le Pulec, Devil’s Hole, and Le Pinacle—each representing a distinct chapter in the island’s deep-time narrative.
Paul Chambers, head of Jersey Island Geopark, described the campaign as a vital step in building public engagement and support as the island moves forward with its UNESCO application.
“The film takes viewers on a visual and auditory journey through Jersey’s geological story—told not through narration, but through the universal languages of music and nature,” said Chambers. “Our goal is to raise awareness and foster a sense of shared pride in the island’s incredible natural heritage.”
The initiative is a collaborative effort between Jersey Island Geopark, Visit Jersey, and ArtHouse Jersey. Advocates say that gaining UNESCO status would bring a range of long-term benefits, including increased sustainable tourism, stronger environmental education, global visibility, and enhanced community involvement.
As the campaign continues to unfold, local organizations are encouraging residents to learn more about the island’s rich geological history and support the bid for international recognition.
