Government Commits to Restoring Historic 1930s Pipe Organ

A historic pipe organ gifted to the government in 1934 will be restored and safeguarded, politicians have confirmed.

The Compton organ, currently housed in Fort Regent, faces an uncertain future as the site is set to be cleared by the end of the year to make way for redevelopment.

Originally installed in the old Forum Cinema, the organ was relocated to the Queen’s Hall in 1991. However, it has since fallen into disuse, with little regular maintenance or public performances.

During a States Assembly session on Thursday, Deputy Lucy Stephenson raised concerns about the instrument’s future. In response, Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan assured members that steps would be taken to preserve it.

The organ was a gift to the people of Jersey from Malcolm L’Amy and Percy Hamel. Deputy Stephenson requested that their contribution be formally acknowledged, to which Jehan responded by expressing gratitude for their “significant contribution” and reaffirming the government’s commitment to its protection.
