A Jersey couple have made a £1 million donation towards the creation of a pioneering medical research institute aimed at accelerating the development of treatments for some of the world's most serious diseases.

James and Mindy Vernon have provided the funding to establish the Digital Collaboration Hub within the planned Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI) at Southampton General Hospital. The hub will bring together advanced computing technology, specialist software and expert researchers to centralise and analyse medical data.

The institute will focus on five key areas of healthcare research: cancer, dementia, sight loss, infectious diseases, and respiratory and allergic conditions.

Professor Paul Elkington, Director of the IMI, welcomed the donation and described it as a major endorsement of the project's ambitions.

"We are incredibly grateful for this generous contribution," he said. "The Institute for Medical Innovation will help ensure life-changing treatments reach patients much more quickly.

"Medical technology is advancing rapidly, and it is essential that research keeps pace. By bringing experts together and harnessing the latest innovations, we can speed up the journey from scientific discovery to patient care."

Professor Elkington said the institute's work could lead to more effective medicines, cutting-edge medical devices and less invasive treatments, reducing the time it takes for breakthroughs to benefit patients.

The IMI is expected to cost £100 million, with the University of Southampton already committing £50 million to the project. The remaining funds will be raised through the university's largest fundraising campaign to date.

James Vernon said the university's research work has a significant impact on communities both locally and beyond.

"The University of Southampton plays a vital role in improving lives through its research," he said. "It is also particularly important to Jersey, as many islanders rely on Southampton's specialist healthcare services.

"This new institute offers an opportunity to strengthen those links further and help deliver better outcomes for patients in the years ahead."
