Channel Island surfing has been given a fresh wave of support with a £10,000 investment from GB Surfing to help nurture local talent.
The grant, part of GB Surfing’s UK Sport-backed programme, is aimed at strengthening the pathway for young surfers aspiring to join the national progression squad. The ultimate ambition is to produce athletes capable of competing for medals at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
This year’s funding has been awarded to Dan Harris and Max Bennett at the Surfyard in Guernsey, who will oversee training programmes designed to prepare the next generation of elite surfers. Last year, the inaugural coaching grant went to Jake Powell at the Jersey Surf School.
The Channel Islands have a long history of producing competitive surfers, despite often challenging tidal conditions. GB Surfing said the new funding will provide a structured coaching framework, tailored to the unique environment of the islands, and connect local athletes with its wider support network.
Coaches in Guernsey welcomed the investment, describing it as a vital step in giving island surfers the tools and opportunities needed to compete at the highest level.
