Islanders Invited to Learn Lifesaving Skills on Restart a Heart Day

Islanders are being encouraged to take part in free training sessions in St Helier today to learn how to save a life using CPR and defibrillation techniques.

Health professionals and members of the Ambulance Service are on hand at Charing Cross, teaching passers-by how to respond in an emergency and highlighting the vital role that bystanders play in improving survival rates.

Currently, only one in 25 people who suffer a cardiac arrest survives without immediate CPR — but that figure rises to one in four when someone steps in to help. With brain damage starting just three minutes after the heart stops, chest compressions can make a crucial difference by keeping blood flowing to the brain.

Katie Campbell, Clinical Tutor with the States of Jersey Ambulance Service, said that quick action is key:

“Early CPR and defibrillation can double a person’s chance of survival following a cardiac arrest. It’s important that as many people as possible know what to do in an emergency. Restart a Heart Day is a fantastic opportunity to build confidence and raise awareness.”

Members of the public can take part in hands-on demonstrations at the stall near the Crapaud statue between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm today (16 October 2025).

A second training site is also running on Brook Street, opposite Voisins, where teams from NAPA Medical Jersey, Normandy Rescue, Independent Training and Medical Supplies, and the Jersey Heart Support Group will be offering demonstrations between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm.

Everyone is welcome to stop by, learn the skills — and be ready to restart a heart.
