Jersey Fire and Rescue Shares Vital Boating Safety Tips Ahead of Sailing Season

As the boating season gets underway, the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service (JFRS) is urging sailors to prioritise safety on the water with a series of precautionary measures.

In a recent advisory, JFRS warned that fires on boats can escalate rapidly, especially due to the build-up of flammable vapours in confined areas. To reduce risk, boat owners and users are encouraged to install fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as ensure there is a clear escape route from every sleeping area on board.

The fire service also reminded sailors to carry sufficient life jackets for all passengers, along with both day and night flares and a reliable VHF radio for emergency communication.

Regular maintenance is key, according to a JFRS spokesperson, who highlighted the importance of inspecting fuel tanks and lines for leaks and ventilating engine compartments before starting the motor. If extra fuel must be carried, it should be stored only in certified containers and kept on the upper deck.

In the event of a fire, JFRS recommends turning off all fuel and gas supplies and using a fire extinguisher if it is safe to do so. Sailors are also advised to avoid approaching other vessels and to alert nearby crews of the danger, while preparing for immediate evacuation if necessary.

Further safety guidance is available on the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service website.
