The Channel Islands Co-operative Society says its climate commitments have been formally approved by an international panel of experts, marking a major step in its journey toward net-zero.

The retailer has pledged to cut emissions across all areas of its business — from buildings and transport to supply chains and services, including food shops, pharmacies and funeral care. Its targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global body regarded as the benchmark for credible corporate climate action.

The society is aiming to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and wider value chain by 2040.

Chief executive Mark Cox said the approval reinforced the Co-op’s responsibility to lead on sustainability. “Our members and customers expect us to set the standard, and we take that seriously,” he said.

The Co-op has been working with sustainability consultancy Simply Sustainable since early 2024 to measure its carbon footprint using recognised industry methods. A spokesperson for the firm praised the retailer’s ambition, saying it reflects the level of action needed to respond to the climate crisis.

Carl Winn, the society’s head of community and sustainability, described the SBTi validation as evidence of a commitment to “meaningful climate action”. He added: “This isn’t just about meeting regulations — it’s about safeguarding our islands and communities for the future.”
