DFDS Admits Error Over Port Dues Charges in Jersey

Ferry operator DFDS has admitted a technical error meant it failed to charge freight customers port dues in Jersey, leading to retrospective bills for local businesses.

The company confirmed that port fees had always applied but were not invoiced due to an oversight. Route director Chris Parker said the charges were consistent with those levied historically by Ports of Jersey.

The retrospective billing has angered businesses including Jersey Oyster, which exports mussels and oysters. Financial controller Andy Hart said the firm could not recover the unexpected costs from customers, as sales had already been made based on earlier freight rates.

Deputy Montfort Tadier, who chairs the States’ economic scrutiny panel, said he had been contacted by importers and exporters hit with the surprise charges.

DFDS said the problem stemmed from a technical issue and stressed that passing on port dues had always been part of its business model in Jersey.
