Jersey Opera House will reopen its doors tonight, welcoming audiences back for the first full programme of live performances in more than four years.

The theatre, celebrating its 125th anniversary, has undergone a £12.7m government-funded refurbishment following its closure at the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Audiences were offered a preview of the revamped venue in April, when two concerts were staged for Liberation Day. The improvements include a refreshed interior with new seating and colour scheme, an upgraded heating system, two new dance studios, expanded hospitality areas, and a modernised plant room. The historic chandelier, however, has been carefully preserved.

The reopening will be marked by Encore! Welcome Home, a three-night gala showcasing local talent, including performers with West End experience.

Deputy Kirsten Morel, Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, described the reopening as “a new season of performance at the heart of the island’s cultural life.”

Laura Robertson, the opera house’s interim chairwoman, said there was strong public enthusiasm for the return of live performances: “Our autumn and winter programme has something for everyone, from sell-out shows by Gilbert O’Sullivan to comedy from Jasper Carrott and Rory Bremner. We are delighted to welcome islanders back.”

The board of Jersey Opera House Limited said its mission remains to provide “outstanding live performances” while strengthening community and education links and building a sustainable, creative organisation.

While the renovation has modernised much of the venue, further fundraising is underway to upgrade stage lighting and sound equipment. Tickets for the reopening shows are now available via the theatre’s website.
