Call for Proper EV Scrappage Plan in Jersey

A Jersey resident has called for a clear government plan to scrap electric and hybrid vehicles, after being told she would have to pay to dispose of her broken hybrid car.

Francesca Guyett said her vehicle, which had no resale value, could only be taken by one company—and only if she paid scrappage costs. She said this was because the Government of Jersey had withdrawn its budget for disposing of electric and hybrid vehicles, despite previously subsidising EV purchases through a scheme that ended in 2024.

"It was really challenging," she said. "There was no support from the government."

Currently, owners of petrol and diesel cars receive payment per tonne when scrapping a vehicle. In contrast, EV and hybrid owners are advised to arrange transport off-island—often at their own cost.

Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan said while there are not many end-of-life EVs on the island yet, officers are working with waste contractors to ensure proper training and facilities are in place.

Deputy Hilary Jeune added that Jersey is working with the UK to develop a scrappage scheme, but it is still in progress. She acknowledged that while numbers are currently low, they will grow as more EVs reach the end of their life.

Ms Guyett said it took her weeks to find someone to ship her car to the UK for free and that the experience has put her off buying another hybrid. "I wanted to buy a full EV," she said. "Now I’m not sure I want to touch one at all."
