Jersey Athletes Enter Final Training Phase Ahead of 2025 Island Games in Orkney

With just one month to go until the 2025 Island Games, Jersey athletes are intensifying their preparations for the international competition set to take place in Orkney from 12 to 18 July. The Scottish archipelago will host around 2,000 athletes from 24 island communities across the globe, competing in 12 different sports.

Jersey will be represented in a variety of disciplines including football, cycling, triathlon, and athletics. Among the competitors is half marathon runner George Rice, who earned a bronze medal at the 2023 Guernsey Games. He’s now fine-tuning his training to tackle Orkney’s notoriously hilly terrain.

"I'm starting to build some nice fitness," said Rice, who is recovering from a recent ankle sprain. "Last week I ran just over 100km (62 miles), and I usually do a half marathon every Sunday—non-competitively. The next few weeks will be about sharpening up with more targeted training."

Rice, pictured finishing a race to cheering crowds, is hopeful for another podium finish. “Guernsey was a fantastic experience, and I imagine Orkney will be just as special. I’m really looking forward to the camaraderie and the atmosphere of having all the islands together.”

Jersey’s women’s football team is also set to compete and has been drawn into a group with Bermuda, the Shetland Islands, and the Isle of Wight. Their manager, Chad Morris, praised his squad's dedication.

"We're training hard, three times a week," he said. "The players are fully committed to what the coaches are putting in place. It's going to be a real challenge, a tough group—but we're excited for it."

Morris acknowledged the logistical hurdles of transporting the team to Orkney but emphasized the reward. “It’s all worth it when you arrive—because a great week of competition and community lies ahead.”
