Woman Jailed for Cocaine Smuggling Attempt in Jersey
A woman who attempted to smuggle cocaine into Jersey has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
Emma Louise Llewellyn, 39, from Stoke-on-Trent, was intercepted by customs officers after arriving on a flight from Liverpool last November. She initially claimed she was visiting a friend for the weekend, but further checks revealed she was carrying 52 grams of cocaine, valued at £13,000, concealed on her person.
During questioning, Llewellyn admitted to attempting to import the drugs and disclosed that she was promised £1,000 for the job. She also revealed she owed £350 to the individual who supplied her with the cocaine. Paul Le Monnier, Senior Manager at Jersey Customs and Immigration Service, warned of the dangers associated with drug smuggling.
“Individuals may be tempted by the offer of payment or the chance to clear debts by importing drugs on behalf of others, but the significant risks and the tough sentences imposed by the courts should serve as a clear deterrent,” he said.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about drug smuggling to report it anonymously via 0800 735 5555.
