A 34-year-old man has been found guilty of a serious assault and criminal damage following a four-day trial at Jersey’s Royal Court.
James was convicted of grave and criminal assault and malicious damage after a violent incident at a woman’s home in St Helier.
The court heard that James became aggressive after being invited to the property and, while under the influence of alcohol, repeatedly attacked the woman and strangled her.
The victim suffered multiple injuries, including bruising and swelling to her face, head and body, as well as a cut to her lip.
Police officers attending the scene after reports of a distressed and injured woman discovered blood inside the property and in communal areas.
During the incident, James also damaged the woman’s mobile phone, preventing her from contacting emergency services. She was later able to leave the property and seek help from members of the public.
Detective Constable Bogdan Jagodka described the incident as a “serious and sustained assault” that left the victim with significant injuries and fearing for her life.
He said alcohol and substance use may have been factors but did not excuse the violence, adding that responsibility rested with the offender.
DC Jagodka said cases of this nature highlighted the ongoing harm caused by violence against women and girls, and praised the victim for her courage in reporting the incident and supporting the prosecution.
James has been remanded in custody and will return to court at a later date for sentencing.
