A team of five swimmers from Jersey have successfully completed a demanding crossing of the English Channel, finishing the challenge ahead of their target time.
Lisa Biddlecombe, Karen Le Cornu, Jean Rhodes, Rhiannon Patel and Rachel Sayers completed the swim in 13 hours and five minutes — more than an hour faster than their original goal of 15 hours.
The team, known as “Five with the Tide”, was supported throughout the crossing by skipper Paul Foreman and crew member Jason Parrott from the Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation, aboard the support boat Optimist.
Describing the experience as “a tough swim”, the group said the achievement was made even more challenging by cold water, unpredictable weather conditions and strong tidal forces.
The English Channel route is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, adding an extra level of difficulty for swimmers attempting the crossing.
The team said: “The English Channel swim route crosses one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and the water is still cold early in the season.
“The weather is unpredictable and a big spring tide brought a technical challenge to the swim.”
The swimmers said some people had questioned whether their goal was too ambitious before they began, but careful preparation and expert support helped them succeed.
They added: “Five with the Tide was a determined team and with the best advice, good preparation, an amazing pilot boat crew and loads of luck, we did Jersey proud.”
The successful crossing marks a major achievement for the Jersey swimmers, who overcame challenging conditions to complete one of the world’s most famous open-water swimming routes.
