Jersey Beach Toilets Hit by £10,000 Vandalism Bill in Six Months

More than £10,000 has been spent in just six months repairing public toilets at Green Island beach, due to repeated vandalism, a Jersey minister has revealed.

Responding to a written question in the States Assembly, Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan said the damage was not limited to one location. He pointed out that antisocial behaviour is a common issue at several public toilet sites across the island.

The question, posed by Deputy Inna Gardiner, asked how much it would cost to build, refurbish, and maintain new public toilet facilities.

In reply, Minister Jehan detailed recent renovation costs: £316,000 was spent on upgrading the West Park toilets, while refurbishment of the Bel Royal block cost £270,000.

He noted that refurbishment costs can vary widely, depending on the extent of work required. The West Park project, for instance, included improved accessibility features and more robust, vandal-resistant fittings.

Jehan also said that estimating the cost of building new facilities is difficult, as it depends on factors like site-specific needs, accessibility requirements, and whether specialist installations are necessary.

While vandalism continues to drive up repair costs, the routine maintenance of public toilets — including daily opening, cleaning, and closing — is also a significant expense, averaging around £1,200 per month per site.
