The Jersey leg of the de Putron Challenge took place on Tuesday at the Royal Jersey Showground, bringing together some of the island’s brightest young students for a day of competitive quizzing.
The event marked the second of the two island challenges, with Year Six and Year Eight pupils from schools across Jersey competing in a knowledge-based quiz designed to test general knowledge, maths, and creative thinking skills.
In the Year Six competition, St Mary’s Primary School claimed first place with an impressive score of nine points. St Luke’s School finished just one point behind in a close second. Other schools reaching the final stages included Plat Douet Primary School, St Michael’s Preparatory School, Rouge Bouillon School and Jersey College Preparatory School.

The Year Eight contest proved equally competitive. After tightly fought heats, St Michael’s Preparatory School, Les Quennevais School, Haute Vallée School and Victoria College advanced to the final. Victoria College ultimately secured victory with 20 points, while Haute Vallée School took second place with 16 points following a tense tie-break against St Michael’s Preparatory School.
All participating students were awarded book vouchers in recognition of their efforts, encouraging continued learning and curiosity. The top two teams in each category also received cash prizes of £450 for first place and £175 for second place to benefit their schools.
The winning teams will now go on to represent Jersey in the inter-island final on 24 March at Jersey Museum. St Mary’s Primary School will compete against Guernsey’s Year Six winners, Elizabeth College Junior School, while Victoria College will face Les Beaucamps High School in the Year Eight category.
Hayley de Putron, founder of the de Putron Challenge and trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation, praised the participants, saying she was continually impressed by the knowledge and creativity shown by students. She added that every team contributed to an exciting and enjoyable competition.
