Millennium Park playground closed as Asian hornet nest is removed

A playground in St Helier has been temporarily closed while officials work to remove a nest of invasive Asian hornets.

Infrastructure and Environment said the play area at Millennium Park would remain closed on Monday and could also be shut on Tuesday as specialist teams carry out the removal operation.

The closure comes amid growing concerns over the spread of Asian hornets in Jersey. The Jersey Asian Hornet Group recorded 694 nests across the island last year, a sharp rise from the 259 nests identified in 2024.

Asian hornets are classed as an invasive species by the government because they prey on native insects and pose a particular threat to honeybees. A single hornet can kill as many as 50 bees in one day.
