Jersey Soup Kitchen Draws Crowds and Celebrates Community Spirit

Jersey’s long-running Soup Kitchen returned to St Helier’s Royal Square for its 27th year, drawing large crowds and strong praise for its sense of community. The annual fundraiser, organised by The Shelter Trust, raises money to support people experiencing homelessness on the island.

More than 40 soups were donated by local restaurants, schools and community groups, offered for a minimum £3 contribution. Many stalls sold out early as residents queued to sample the dishes.

Supporter Mark Duffy said the atmosphere was “fantastic,” adding that enjoying a cup of spicy butternut squash soup while supporting a local charity “is what makes Jersey special.”

Among the most popular creations was a Jersey crab chowder prepared by Gabby Mason of Driftwood Café and Jade’s Fisheries, which sold out before midday. She said the event showcased “the generous spirit that’s part of Jersey’s culture.”

Members of the island’s Ukrainian community also took part, serving vegetarian borscht. Lera Evered, originally from Kyiv, said contributing to the event was a way of thanking islanders for their support.

The Shelter Trust hopes to match last year’s total of £20,000. Trustee Richard Robins said the fundraiser was vital: “We house around 100 people every night, and food costs are huge. Every donation helps us keep going.”
