Road Safety Improvements Planned Around St Saviour's School
Plans are underway to make the roads surrounding St Saviour’s School safer for children, as part of the Infrastructure Department’s Safer Routes to School initiative.
Key changes include the installation of new pedestrian crossings, one of which will be placed directly opposite the main entrance to the parish primary school.
A new three-metre-wide shared-use path will also be constructed across a nearby field, linking Le Clos Paumelle and La Rue de la Retraite. This path will run parallel to Bagatelle Road, offering a safer route for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Illustrations of the scheme show that the pavement on the southbound side of Bagatelle Road will be removed. This will allow for a wider road space on the northbound side, next to the school grounds. A one-metre roadside buffer will be added to enhance safety during busy school drop-off and pick-up times.
An unloading bay will also be introduced to accommodate HGVs delivering school meals, helping to streamline deliveries and reduce roadside congestion.
Officials have confirmed that the project has been carefully designed to minimise disruption to the surrounding landscape. Mature trees will be preserved where possible, and any that are affected will be replaced with semi-mature planting.
St Saviour’s headteacher, Kirstie Williams, has welcomed the improvements, saying:
“We are fully supportive of the aim to make walking and cycling to school more attractive and safer for our pupils and our families.”
Details of the proposed changes will be available for public viewing at St Saviour’s Parish Hall starting Tuesday, 2 July. A formal planning application will be submitted later this year, with construction expected to take place during summer 2026.
