Historic J5 Number Plate and Scooter Sell for £350,000 in Jersey Auction
A prized two-digit registration plate, J5, has sold for £350,000 — despite being mounted on a scooter that no longer works.
The sale, handled by Simon Drieu & Co earlier this week, marks the second-highest price ever achieved for a number plate in Jersey. Only J4, sold in 2020 for £380,000 and originally issued to the Lieutenant Governor’s vehicle, has fetched more.
Auctioneer Simon Drieu noted that in June, the plate J69 reached £230,000, now the island’s third-highest sale.
He explained that all Jersey registration marks remain the property of the Inspector of Motor Traffic. Buyers purchase the “Mark Right” — the legal right to assign the number to a vehicle — and the inspector retains the power to recall any registration at any time.
By law, every registration sold must be assigned to a vehicle, regardless of its condition. “That’s why J5 was mounted on a non-running scooter of negligible value,” Mr Drieu said.
