Jersey is preparing for a burst of summer heat over the late May bank holiday weekend, with forecasters predicting temperatures could climb into the low 30s.
After two disappointing long weekends marked by unsettled weather, islanders are expected to enjoy several days of sunshine and unusually high temperatures stretching well into next week.
According to Jersey Met, conditions are set to warm rapidly from Friday, with temperatures forecast to peak at around 29°C before climbing even higher over the weekend. Forecasters say highs of 30°C or 31°C are possible by Sunday, with the warm spell likely to continue into the half-term break.
Senior forecaster Martin Nduta said the change in weather was being driven by a strong area of high pressure across Europe, bringing light southerly winds and warm continental air towards the Channel Islands.
The prolonged spell of heat could also see Jersey officially enter heatwave territory. Under local criteria, temperatures must exceed 28°C for three consecutive days for a heatwave to be declared.
The warm and settled conditions are expected to bring busy beaches, packed outdoor attractions and a timely boost for hospitality businesses heading into the school holiday period.
