Plans for a new skate park in St Helier are expected to be temporary, with the facility set to relocate within a few years.
Infrastructure Minister Constable Andy Jehan has confirmed that the skate park proposed for South Hill is intended as a short-term solution. Once redevelopment work at Fort Regent is complete, the skate park would move into the newly upgraded site.
Speaking to the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Panel, Constable Jehan said the South Hill location would only be used for "two or three years," after which the area could be repurposed to support cycling proficiency training.
“The idea is to have the skate park at South Hill while we wait for Fort Regent to be ready,” he explained. “After that, the space could be turned over to cycling, making sure we get lasting value from the work done on the site.”
Jersey's skate community recently celebrated the opening of a permanent facility at Les Quennevais Sports Centre in 2023, an event that drew hundreds of attendees. The proposed South Hill skate park aims to provide another option for skaters closer to town, albeit on a temporary basis.
