Portelet Bay Café Seeks Approval for Emergency Repairs After Rejected Sea Wall Plan
Plans by Portelet Bay Café to rearrange beach boulders into a protective rock barrier were rejected due to a missing Environmental Impact Assessment. The café, located between the sea and a crumbling cliff, is now seeking permission for emergency repairs to its sea wall and access steps.
Co-owner Piers Ostroumoff expressed frustration, saying the original plan aimed to protect nearby trees and reduce public risk. Architect Nick Socrates argued the necessary environmental details were already included and called the rejection a "tick-box exercise."
The revised application focuses solely on repairing existing structures, which Planning has confirmed does not require an environmental assessment.
The project addresses ongoing erosion threatening the café and public beach access.
