Plans Submitted for Historical Mural on St Helier Casemate
Plans have been submitted to transform a wartime casemate on Jersey’s seafront into a historical art installation celebrating key moments from the island’s past.
Jersey Property Holdings has proposed a painted mural for the Grade II listed building on the Esplanade in St Helier. The artwork would cover three seaward-facing walls — northwest, southwest, and southeast — and feature a montage of scenes including St Helier the Hermit, the world’s first air race, and the construction of the Grand Hotel.
Currently used informally as a storage space with a public toilet extension, the 1940s-era casemate was built by occupying forces during World War II. The development aims to raise public appreciation for the site’s heritage.
The organisation described the project as “minor in scale,” noting the mural would be applied to already painted surfaces, with no impact on the environment. They said the mural would enhance the structure’s appearance, highlight its historical value, and draw attention to what they called “a somewhat forgotten part of St Helier’s heritage.”
