Jersey Opera House to Reopen with Special Liberation Day Concerts

After five years of closure, Jersey's historic Opera House will reopen its doors to mark the 80th anniversary of the island’s Liberation from German occupation with two special concerts.

The Grade II listed venue will host the Philharmonia Orchestra and Jersey singer Georgie Mae-Bishop, who will perform World War II-era songs as part of the opening event for the Liberation International Music Festival.

The festival, organised by Music in Action and its chairman James Mews, will run from 9 to 18 May, with performances also scheduled at venues such as Hamptonne, Gorey Harbour, and Rozel Fort.

Mr Mews called the reopening a “momentous occasion,” adding: “This iconic venue will once again resonate with live performance, bringing world-class music to the heart of our community.”

Jersey Opera House chairman Dave Chalk said it was fitting that Music in Action—one of the theatre's long-time supporters—would be the first local group to take the stage on Liberation Day.

“Our festival offers real Jersey stories,” Mews added. “We’ll be celebrating freedom, resilience, love, and the unifying power of music.”
