Digital Donation Brings Ancient Site to Life for All Visitors

A heritage site in Jersey is becoming more accessible thanks to the donation of two tablet devices designed to offer immersive virtual tours.

The tablets, now available at La Hougue Bie, home to one of the world’s oldest buildings—a Neolithic passage grave—were provided by telecommunications firm JT as part of an effort to enhance educational inclusion.

The technology allows both children and adults to explore the historic site virtually, offering an alternative for those who may find the physical environment challenging.

Jon Brennan, head of education at Jersey Heritage, explained: “The entrance to the ancient passage grave is a low, dark stone structure, which can present physical, emotional, or psychological barriers—particularly for some children. These tablets mean people can still experience the site, even if they’re unable to enter the passage itself.”

Each year, around 40 school groups visit La Hougue Bie, with an estimated two students per class unable to access the full site due to physical or mental health concerns. JT said the new devices will help ensure equal learning opportunities for every student.

Pip Carpenter, JT’s Head of Consumer Markets and Community Partnerships, added: “It’s always inspiring to see how digital technology can open doors and help everyone engage with Jersey’s rich heritage.”
