Jersey could soon see new restrictions on scallop fishing, with proposals to raise the minimum landing size for king scallops.

The island’s Environment Minister has suggested increasing the legal size from 102mm to 105mm. Officials say the move is designed to give scallops more time to reproduce, safeguarding stocks for future generations of fishers.

According to a government report, both commercial and recreational fishers were consulted and expressed support for the change. While the new limit could mean slightly fewer scallops are caught in the short term, the report notes that it should lead to healthier, more sustainable fisheries over time.

The changes would also align Jersey’s rules with those in the Normano-Breton Gulf, ensuring consistency between French and Jersey vessels and making enforcement simpler.

If approved, new legislation will be drafted, with the Environment Department keeping the industry informed throughout the process.
