Jersey's Living Wage Set to Rise in 2025

The recommended living wage rate in Jersey is set to increase to £14.13 per hour in 2025, following a decision by the Jersey Living Wage Advisory Group.

The announcement reflects efforts to ensure that wages align with the rising cost of living and basic needs for workers on the island.

Minimum Wage Progress

Earlier in the year, Jersey's Council of Ministers confirmed plans to raise the minimum wage from £11.64 to £13 per hour starting 1 April 2025, with the long-term goal of aligning it with the living wage.

The living wage, as defined, represents the income necessary for meeting a worker's basic needs, such as food, housing, and utilities.

Commentary from Patrick Lynch

Patrick Lynch, CEO of Caritas Jersey, an anti-poverty charity, emphasised the importance of the living wage during a period marked by rising costs, including rent and utilities. Lynch noted that the new rate closely aligns with two-thirds of Jersey's median wage for 2024, which was £14.17, a figure seen as aspirational by the States Assembly.

He urged the government to commit to full parity between the minimum and living wages within the current and next assembly terms, highlighting the urgency of addressing poverty as foodbank usage on the island continues to grow.

Call to Action for Employers

Mr. Lynch also encouraged more employers to adopt the Jersey Living Wage standard, which would provide workers with greater financial stability amid rising living costs, particularly as the new year approaches.

This wage increase represents a significant step toward addressing income inequality and improving living standards for Jersey's workforce.
