Jersey's politicians will soon be asked to agree on the date for the upcoming 2026 general election, with a proposal suggesting it could be held on Sunday, 7 June 2026.

The Privileges and Procedures Committee has put forward this date, citing research that shows weekend voting tends to result in higher voter turnout in other regions. Connétable Karen Shenton-Stone, Chair of the Committee, explained that Sundays are often the preferred choice for voters in areas with strong participation rates. She believes that holding the election on a weekend would make it easier for Islanders, particularly working individuals and students, to cast their ballots.

"Weekend voting also allows venues like schools to serve as polling stations, and it gives families the opportunity to involve their children in the democratic process," she said. "Real democracy ensures that all adults have an equal chance to vote, and we must explore ways to make this happen effectively."

Voter turnout in Jersey has been relatively low, with only 44% of voters participating in past elections over the last 30 years, a figure that rose slightly to 44.7% in 2022. A recent report also highlighted that weekday elections disproportionately disadvantage full-time workers and students. Notably, 53% of voters in recent elections were aged 65 and older, while just 17% were between the ages of 16 and 34.

The States Members will debate the proposal on Tuesday, 1 April 2025.
