Jersey prepares for a day of high-flying spectacle as air display returns

Thousands of spectators are expected to gather along St Aubin’s Bay today as the Jersey International Air Display brings another day of aviation excitement to the island.

The annual event gets underway at 1pm, with aircraft scheduled to make repeated passes over the bay before the Red Arrows are due to bring the display to a close from around 4.30pm.

The programme features a mix of historic and modern aviation, including the Hawker Hurricane, Navy Wings’ Fairey Swordfish and the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress.

Among the highlights will be the appearance of the Catalina, which will be flown by 77-year-old Jersey-born pilot John Harmsworth.

Describing the event as a major occasion for the island, Mr Harmsworth said he would fly the aircraft along the full length of the bay several times to give spectators across the area a good view.

“It’s a big outing for the whole island,” he said.

“I will be flying the whole length of the bay several times, so everybody - no matter what end you are - will have a jolly good view of the aeroplane.”

Schools are closed for the event, with large crowds expected to take advantage of the opportunity to watch the aircraft from the island’s coastline.

The forecast is for cloudy conditions with light winds, brighter spells and a small chance of light rain.

The Red Arrows’ appearance comes after the RAF display team withdrew from last night’s Guernsey Air Display at short notice because the aircraft could not remain away from their home base overnight.

Significant traffic restrictions will also be in place. Victoria Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Bel Royal and West Park from midday until approximately 6pm.

La Rue de Galet, Farleys Lane, Paris Lane and Tyneville Lane will be restricted to access for residents and premises only.

Drivers wishing to park on Victoria Avenue will be able to reach Spur Road between 12pm and 12.50pm.

The Esplanade will also be closed, while some areas will have restricted viewing. These include the beach between La Fregate Café and St Aubin’s Harbour, with exclusion zones also in place on the water.

Organisers are asking visitors to support the event by purchasing a programme or making a donation. The air display is regarded as an important attraction for visitors and provides a welcome boost to the island’s economy after the main summer season.
