Jersey has made a formal approach to the Portuguese government seeking to be taken off its national list of tax havens, newly released documents show.
Information disclosed through a Freedom of Information request confirms that the island is currently classified by Portugal as having a “privileged tax regime” under its domestic legislation.
The documents reveal that the request followed a visit to Jersey in June by Portugal’s ambassador, during which discussions were held about the island’s status. The ambassador agreed at the time to raise the issue with authorities in Lisbon.
Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, Deputy Ian Gorst, later submitted a written appeal to the ambassador, His Excellency Nuno Brito, formally asking for Jersey to be removed from the list.
The move comes amid recent changes to Portugal’s blacklist, with Hong Kong, Liechtenstein and Uruguay having been taken off following similar representations.
According to the FOI response, Jersey’s government plans to continue engaging with the Portuguese Embassy as discussions on the matter progress.
