Jersey Patients to Access Specialist Psychiatric Care in Dorset Hospital

Patients from Jersey requiring specialised psychiatric treatment will now have access to services at St Ann’s Hospital in Dorset, following official approval from the island’s Health Minister.

The hospital has been designated as an "approved establishment," ensuring that islanders who need psychiatric intensive care—unavailable locally—can receive the necessary support. This approval also allows patients to be transferred to other wards within the hospital when clinically appropriate.

Jersey’s adult mental health services will oversee and monitor the service to ensure standards are maintained.

A government spokesperson stated: "Governance checks have confirmed that St Ann’s Hospital provides appropriate and adequate care for patients requiring this specialised service, which cannot be offered in Jersey."

The decision also impacts individuals transferred to UK hospitals through the criminal justice system, as facilities must meet approval criteria under Jersey’s mental health law.

A recent Care Quality Commission report rated the trust’s acute psychiatric wards and intensive care units as good, reinforcing confidence in the hospital’s ability to meet patients' needs.
