Call for Review of Jersey’s Nuisance Law After Complaint Upheld
Jersey’s nuisance legislation is failing to adequately protect islanders and should be reviewed, the States of Jersey Complaints Board (SJCB) has said.
The panel upheld a complaint from St Helier resident Michelle Le Cornu, who reported noise, vibrations and electric shocks from nearby substations. She argued the Environment Department should have issued an enforcement notice.
The SJCB warned the current law was having a “detrimental impact on health and wellbeing” and urged a priority review.
Environment Minister Constable Andy Jehan said officers had carried out extensive checks, including expert reviews, but found no consistent evidence of a statutory nuisance.
Panel deputy chair Andy Hunter said the investigation had not gone far enough in measuring resonance or fully exploring the complaint.
