Jersey Mum Walks 100 Miles to Support Children with Cancer
A Jersey mother is set to walk 100 miles this month to raise awareness and funds for children affected by cancer.
Mel Thompson is taking on the challenge throughout September as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, covering one mile for every child in the UK diagnosed each year with neuroblastoma — a rare and aggressive cancer that mainly affects babies and young children.
Her fundraising effort will support Neuroblastoma UK, which invests in research to develop gentler treatments and ultimately a cure.
Mel’s son Quinn was just five months old when he was diagnosed with the disease in 2021. Now in remission, he is one of the fortunate cases — but Mel says many families are not so lucky.
“Along the way, we’ve met brave little warriors whose stories ended far too soon and those who are still fighting,” she said. “By sharing our story, I hope to raise awareness of this devastating disease, shine a light on the urgent need for better research, and inspire support for families still fighting.”
She also highlighted how childhood cancer receives less funding than people might expect, describing it as a “taboo” subject that too often goes unspoken.
Mel hopes to raise £2,500 through her challenge.
