Milk and butter produced in Jersey have been recalled after traces of a chemical not suitable for human consumption were discovered, the island’s dairy company has confirmed.

Jersey Dairy said the recall affects limited quantities of its 1-litre bottles of 2.5% fat reduced milk with a use-by date of 23 March, as well as 250g packs of unsalted butter marked with a best-before date of 8 June.

According to the company, most of the affected items were identified and held before reaching shops, though a small number were distributed to customers.

The dairy said the recall was issued as a precaution, despite no reported cases of illness and only a very small level of contamination being detected.

Company officials estimated the concentration of the substance at around one part per million and stressed that no other Jersey Dairy products are involved.

A spokesperson said the business had been working with the Environmental Health and Public Health departments while managing the issue.

They added: “We sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their co-operation in removing the affected products from sale and use immediately.”
