Jersey is bracing for potentially record-breaking temperatures this week, with forecasters predicting highs of 38°C on Wednesday and warning that the Island could even reach 40°C.
If temperatures climb that high, Jersey would break its current all-time record of 37.9°C, which was recorded during the heatwave of July 2022.
The previous record before that stood at 36°C, first reached in 2003 and matched again in 2009.
The latest forecast comes as the Island prepares for an intense period of hot weather, with temperatures expected to remain in the mid-30s over the coming days.
Concerns have been raised about the impact of the extreme heat on vulnerable residents, schools and water supplies.
Schools across Jersey have been advised to allow pupils to wear summer uniforms and PE kits to help them stay cool, while some have chosen to close early due to the conditions.
A temperature of 38°C would place Jersey among the hottest areas in north-west Europe and would also smash the Island’s previous June record of 33.4°C.
Health officials and authorities are urging Islanders to take precautions as the heatwave develops, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and checking on those who may be most affected by the rising temperatures.
