A new system designed to automatically register eligible residents to vote is being introduced in Jersey ahead of the island’s next election.

Vote.je announced that the automatic voter registration (AVR) scheme will use existing Government of Jersey data to enrol islanders aged 16 and over who are eligible to vote. The move aims to simplify the registration process and increase participation in the democratic process.

Jersey’s next election, scheduled for Sunday 7 June, will see voters choose a new group of politicians to form the government.

Under the new system, residents will no longer need to manually sign up to the electoral register. Vote.je said this would not only make voting more accessible but also reduce administrative work and costs for parish authorities.

Deputy Steve Ahier, chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee, described the initiative as a significant development for the island.

“At a time when many other jurisdictions are still working towards similar reforms, we are leading the way,” he said.

“This modernisation of our electoral system will make it simpler and more convenient for islanders to access their right to vote.”

Islanders who want to confirm whether they have been automatically registered are encouraged to contact their parish directly, Vote.je added.
