Jersey’s government has not received any direct income from the new Bergerac television series, despite having invested in its production, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has confirmed.

The inquiry highlighted that the government contributed more than £700,000 towards the project and asked what financial returns had been made. While officials did not confirm the precise figure, they stated that as of 13 August, no direct revenue had been generated from the first series, which was filmed on the island and broadcast on 27 February 2025.

Deputy Kirsten Morel, Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, has previously acknowledged the funding was a “leap of faith.” Speaking in the States last year, he explained that efforts had been made to secure protections against losses.

Even if the show did not turn a profit, he said, the investment still carried benefits. These included opportunities for local

businesses and the creation of an apprenticeship scheme, giving islanders hands-on experience in television production.

“The worst outcome,” Mr Morel argued, “is that Jersey’s government has spent money with Jersey businesses.”

The FOI request also noted that the series had attracted international sales, asking what return had been made from these deals. Officials maintained that no direct revenue had yet been received.
