Jersey Steps Up with £300,000 Donation to Support Myanmar Earthquake Relief

In response to the devastating earthquake that has struck Myanmar, Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) is committing £300,000 in emergency funding to support relief efforts on the ground.

The aid will be split evenly between three humanitarian organisations working directly with affected communities: the British Red Cross, People in Need, and Age International. Each charity will receive £100,000 to bolster their ongoing support in the region.

Myanmar is grappling with the aftermath of a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that has left widespread destruction in its wake. Vital infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings, has been heavily damaged, cutting off access to essential services for millions.

Prior to the disaster, an estimated one-third of Myanmar’s population—around 19 million people—were already in need of humanitarian assistance. The earthquake has only deepened the crisis, with thousands feared dead and millions more displaced.

Funds from Jersey will help the British Red Cross work alongside the Myanmar Red Cross to provide emergency first aid, distribute life-saving supplies, and deploy mobile health teams. People in Need will deliver rapid emergency relief through its network of local partners, while Age International will focus on supporting older people and individuals with disabilities, ensuring access to food, clean water, medical aid, and shelter.

This latest commitment reflects Jersey’s ongoing dedication to international humanitarian response, standing in solidarity with those affected by global emergencies.
